Chicago architect Barry Byrne apprenticed with Frank Lloyd
Wright from 1902 to 1907, serving as structural engineer at Unity Temple. Byrne went on to Seattle and worked with Wright’s
sons in California. Byrne also worked
for Walter Burley Griffin. He designed many
revolutionary buildings for the Catholic Church, i.e. the Saint Thomas the
Apostle (1924) in Hyde Park, and churches in Ireland. Join SAH for a lecture on Byrne by Vince
Michael, Executive Director of the Global Heritage Fund in Palo Alto and former
director of the Preservation Program at the School of the Art Institute. Michael’s book will be available for sale,
and is a long overdue look at this very talented architect. Please reserve

St. Ignatius Prep., Architectural Fragment Collection, and Holy Family Church Visit
Meet at St. Ignatius College Preparatory School, 1076 W. Roosevelt Road.
Join SAH for an extraordinary tour of the St. Ignatius Prep School grounds, with its amazing collection of lost city architectural fragments (including the only remaining Louis Sullivan Chicago Stock Exchange terra cotta cornice fragment, 22’ in length - over 10 tons)
The culmination of Father Arnold J. Damen work in Chicago, the Second Empire-style brick school edifice was designed by Canadian architect Toussaint Menard; constructed from 1866-1869. It is a rare and distinctive example of institutional design pre-dating the Chicago fire of 1871. The additions to the 19-acre campus since the early days amount to 23,000 square feet. We will also tour Holy Family Church immediately to the west at 1080 W. Roosevelt Road (also spared in the fire: 1859 structure by architects Dillenburg & Zucher; façade additions and interior, 1860, by John Van Osdel; 1874 steeple by John P. Huber; 2002 restoration by architect John Vinci; look for its angel choir of full-size musicians).

Playboy Architecture: 1953 - 1979 with Professor Beatriz Colomina

Princeton Professor Beatriz Colomina’s lecture will focus on a recent exhibition organized around how Chicago-based “Playboy Magazine” deployed architecture design to shape a new identity for the American man. The exhibition was based on a three-year research project led by Professor Colomina on the influences of “Playboy Magazine” and the Playboy clubs on architectural design in the period from 1953 to 1979, whether in the design of the clubs, or in the dissemination of ideas about swinging bachelor pads, conversation pits, portable playhouses, and penthouse apartments. The lecture is sponsored jointly by CCSAH and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago
