Civic Opera, Antiquarian Books, Crow Island School, Bruce Goff House

Civic Opera House Tours, 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 16. See details here from Chicago Art Deco Society. The Opera House originally designed by Graham,  Anderson, Probst and White underwent an extensive 1993 renovation. Carol Stitzer, formerly of Lyric Opera and architect Eric Kuene will lead this tour.

Midwest Chapter of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America offers a free event on April 23, 2016, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m, in celebration of International Rare Book and Copyright Day. It will be held at The Glessner House in the coach house located at 1800 S. Prairie Avenue. Tours of the Museum will be as regularly scheduled but will also offer a more detailed survey of the Glessner library.

Seventy five years after opening its doors, the Crow Island School in Winnetka Illinois is still a relevant and provocative model for elementary school design. This National Historic Landmark offers a prime example of the warm modernist furniture of Eliel and Ero Saarinen. The child-centric layout was the work of of Perkins, Wheeler & Will.

Murray-Green Library, 10th floor.
Free admission.

John H. Waters, Preservation Programs Manager for the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy, will describe Goff’s Aurora home designed with a center circle 50 feet in diameter and two circular bedroom wings. It is constructed of anthracite coal, steel, glass, cedar, and hemp, and has remained relatively unchanged since its construction.
